BREAKDOWN
CAN'T DRINK SALT WATER
SEEKING:
MOTHER: Late 30s-early 50s. Indigenous/Native. Member of the Lummi Nation. Tired, road weary, competent. Her favorite smell is rose, her favorite pants are elastic waist, she prefers things to be “just so,” but they never are. Searching for her daughter, who has gone missing. Lyrical and ferocious in turns. Tenacious through her fear.
JEN: mid 20s, mixed Native and white. New staff member to the shelter. Favorite pants are black ribcage Levi’s she spent half a semester’s financial aid money on two years ago. Everything she uses is in her car, but she also has an apartment. She's looking for something. Sardonic, but genuine. She doesn't totally know who she is or where her life is going yet, but she has good instincts.
SIMON: Mid 30s-60s, white. He and his wife Dina run a shelter for victims of sex trafficking through their church. He loves the Lord, wants to do right in all things. His favorite pants are Dockers. He prefers things to be organized, and they always are, but rarely by his hand. Absolutely sincere in his commitment to his work. Tries to be aware of his blind spots, though he doesn't always succeed.
DINA (pronounced Dee-nah): 30s - 60s, any ethnicity. Married to Simon and stands beside him in the running of the shelter. Her favorite pants are a lavender skort from Ross Dress for Less. She’s possibly wearing some understated trad wife dress. She is the organizer of all the things. Efficient, but not soft or maternal.
STAR: Early 20s, Indigenous/Native. A member of the Lummi Nation. An ingenue in her essence. She now dwells in the brackish waters between the sea and the river. Wonder is her most common state. She may not have pants. But if she did, her favorite pair would be something she could move freely in, shapeless, and flowy. The missing daughter.
RAVEN: Any age, any gender. Indigenous/Native. An Ancestor, a spirit, a scavenger. On the lookout. Always searching. Kind of hapless, but has a direct line to the heart, which leads the way in all things. A mover/physical performer - this is a non-speaking but omnipresent role. A powerful presence. Instrumental or musical skills a plus.
